The universe of the art of Jill Casty is ever-expanding. The diverse journey of her always colorful work is now exploring the wonders of glass art.
In this major and fulfilling turn, she is focusing on the color-rich expressiveness of unique dramatic and joyful glass fusions – blending this dramatic glass art in ensembles with the power and energy of a variety of metals. These ensembles are wall and standing sculptures, moderate in size, on an intimate scale. They are created for interior spaces, terraces and gardens, residential and public. And in one new series, single independent painterly panels of fused glass are floated in a framework of varied sculptural open-work metals. In another new direction, bold solo glass panels float on walls without metal accompaniment.
Earlier, her art for public sites enlivened and humanized large public spaces, bringing a sense of celebration and grace to an everyday experience. These sculptures use a variety of metals; the aerial art employs combinations of materials – metals, Plexiglas, glass itself.
Her current work in glass has been called “painterly,” using glass fusions as a painter uses a brush to create rhythms, textures, flowing fields and forms of color. Joined to an equally expressive shaping of the metals, this exuberant glass carries echoes from the dramatic flow and sweep in the canvases of abstract expressionist painters to the angular lyricism of contemporary geometric abstraction.
